Japan&rsquo;s Motofumi Suwa achieved the best race of his career at the Asian Race Walking Championships &ndash; a World Athletics Race Walking Tour Bronze meeting &ndash; in Nomi, Japan, on Sunday (15).
The surprise winner&rsquo;s 2:58:21 marathon race walk performance was an improvement of more than six minutes on his previous PB from October.
It also placed him more than a minute clear of his compatriot Hiroto Jusho who also comfortably dipped under three hours, securing second place in 2:59:31.
In the women&rsquo;s race, Yukiko Umeno followed up her half marathon win in Kobe last month with another comfortable victory, this time over double the distance in 3:33:47.
Suwa does boast a 1:18:42 20km race walk PB but he was a modest 13th in 1:23:29 in Kobe for the half marathon. In&nbsp;fact, the 26-year-old's only other major win is a national 10km victory from April 2019.
However, Sunday was his day and when he upped the gears at 35km, it was game over.
Rain and a low 3&deg;C temperature greeted athletes at the start, with many wearing thin plastic rain macs. Most were also wearing sunglasses, despite the leaden skies.
A group of four including the eventual top two plus Kazuki Takahashi and Yutaro Murayama quickly established a lead, but Murayama soon dropped off the pace.
The&nbsp;remaining trio reached 10km in 43:39 to show intent with a pace now close to 4:22 for each 1km lap.&nbsp;
Another 5km on and a watery sun gave way to the real thing.
The heat was on for the leading trio in both senses, but they kept up their relentless pace until 28km when Jusho forged a small gap &ndash; a gap that quickly grew. It was 2:08:30 at 30km for him and he had 13 seconds over the chasing pair
However, Suwa also accelerated and quickly went after him, but Takahashi was left in the pair&rsquo;s wake.
Suwa slowly reeled in the leader, and both were together again at 35km before the winner found an extra gear to push ahead. The new leader&rsquo;s stride was quicker &ndash; and getting faster.
Jusho was now sucking in air, his bobbing head betraying the strain.&nbsp;But Suwa was moving at a ferocious pace: his legs a blur compared to the lapped race walkers he constantly passed on his way to the finish line for a landmark victory.
Third place went to Takahashi in 3:02:45 and fourth to an exhausted Murayama in 3:03:21.
Korean guest Hyunmyeong Joo kept up a steady pace of around 22:00 for every 5km and was rewarded with fifth place in 3:05:05. His compatriot Dongmin Im was a little further back for sixth in 3:05:50.
In the women&rsquo;s race, Umeno &ndash; who was wearing a snood, arm warmers, gloves, sunglasses and mac &ndash; was away on her own from the start with Maika Yagi already 50 metres adrift and the veteran Masumi Fuchise even further back in third.
Yagi then quickened her pace and drew level with Umeno but was content to track the leader.
The smoother Umeno simply upped the pace again to forge a second lead before 20km, reached in 1:42:01, and that was that as far as the contest was concerned.
At the finish, Umeno had jettisoned all but her gloves and capacious snood with just enough room for a first place medal around her neck.
A tired Yagi clocked 3:36:06 for second and a fast-finishing Fuchise was just 30 seconds behind for third.
Yuki Yoshizumi was a distant fourth in 3:43:31.
In the Asian Half Marathon Championships held in conjunction, Japan's Tomohiro Noda strolled to a 1:21:58 win. Behind him came China&rsquo;s Huang Peiyang in 1:24:56, with the podium completed by Uzbekistan's Rasulbek Dilmurodov in 1:25:31.
The women&rsquo;s race was won by China&rsquo;s Zhang Ting in 1:36:18 from Kazakhstan's Yasmina Toxanbayeva (1:37:17) and Korea&rsquo;s Lee Seha (1:40:17).

Suwa and Umeno win marathon titles at Asian Race Walking Championships

Ethiopia&rsquo;s Fotyen Tesfay stormed to second on the world all-time list by running a 2:10:51 marathon debut at the Zurich Barcelona Marathon &ndash; a World Athletics Elite Label road race&nbsp;&ndash;&nbsp;on Sunday (15).
The 28-year-old started the race as the third-fastest women&rsquo;s half marathon runner in history and ended it by surpassing that feat over double the distance, finishing within a minute of the world marathon record.
She won the race by almost eight minutes ahead of Kenya&rsquo;s Joan Jepkosgei Kiplimo, while Uganda&rsquo;s Abel Chelangat won the men&rsquo;s race in 2:04:57.
After finishing seventh at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and eighth at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 in the 10,000m, Tesfay started her marathon journey by covering the first 10km in 31:05 in Barcelona as she followed her two male pacemakers.
They picked up the pace and hit the halfway mark in 1:05:05, forging on to reach 30km in 1:32:00.
Her target was the world record of 2:09:56 set by Ruth Chepngetich in Chicago in 2024 and Tesfay looked determined as she went through 40km in 2:03:31. While she was unable to dip under 2:10 this time, Tesfay&nbsp;was rewarded with the fastest ever women&rsquo;s marathon debut, an Ethiopian record and the second-quickest performance in history.
&ldquo;Today was fantastic &ndash; not what I was expecting, but it is good,&rdquo; she told the race broadcaster, speaking through an interpreter.
&ldquo;My plan was to attack the world record but today there was a lot of wind, I was not able to push in the last part of the race. Today I did not succeed, but in the next marathon I would like to try for the world record.&rdquo;
Jepkosgei Kiplimo finished second in 2:18:42 and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Zeineba Yimer was third in 2:18:49.
In the men&rsquo;s race, Chelangat and Kenya&rsquo;s Patrick Mosin broke away and Chelangat tracked his rival through 40km in 1:58:40. Chelangat made his move as they reached a water station and he looked in control as he strode away with two hours on the clock.
Mosin couldn&rsquo;t respond and Chelangat clinched the win unchallenged, clocking 2:04:57 to Mosin&rsquo;s 2:05:01. Kenya&rsquo;s Jonathan Samanayo Korir was third in 2:05:29.

<h2>Teklu and Desse win Seoul Marathon</h2>
Haftu Teklu retained his title in a course record and Haven Hailu Desse claimed a clear win to complete an Ethiopian double at the Seoul Marathon &ndash; a World Athletics Platinum Label road race &ndash; on Sunday (15).

Teklu prevailed after a fierce sprint finish against Getaneh Molla and they led the top five all under the previous course record of 2:04:43.
Teklu won in a PB of 2:04:23, just one second ahead of his compatriot Molla. Kenya&rsquo;s Gilbert Kibet and Enock Kinyamal and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Tsegaye Getachew and Sufaro Woliyi Kabeto remained in contention until the closing stages and also dipped under 2:05.
Desse had a much more comfortable victory, winning by 30 seconds ahead of her compatriot Bekelech Gudeta &ndash; 2:19:09 to 2:19:39, both PBs.&nbsp;
Six runners remained in the lead pack of the men's race as 40km was reached in 1:58:03.
Molla was first to move but he was tracked every step by Teklu. They turned the final bend and Molla was a step ahead until Teklu used a perfectly timed kick to surge past him with the finish line in sight.
Teklu started celebrating but had to run hard all the way to the finish line to retain his title in 2:04:23. Molla was a close second (2:04:24) and they were followed by Kibet (2:04:32), Getachew (2:04:33), Woliyi Kabeto (2:04:36) and Kinyamal (2:04:46).
In the women's race, Desse ran as part of a pack through halfway in 1:08:42 and 30km in 1:37:46. She pushed ahead after 35km and reached 40km in 2:12:01, running solo to the finish line which she reached in 2:19:09 for a clear victory.&nbsp;
Gudeta was second and Bosena Mulatie completed an Ethiopian top three in 2:19:47, while Kenya&rsquo;s Joyce Chepkemoi Tele also broke 2:20, doing so for the first time with a PB 2:19:50.

<h2>Matata and Aga triumph in Meishan</h2>
Kenya&rsquo;s Alex Nzioka Matata and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Ruti Aga were the winners at the Meishan Renshou Half Marathon &ndash; a World Athletics Platinum Label road race &ndash; in Meishan, China, on Sunday (15).
It was a successful title defence for Matata, who also won half marathons in Ras Al Khaimah, Yangzhou, Istanbul and New Delhi last year.
This time he triumphed in 59:51, finishing almost a minute ahead of Ethiopia&rsquo;s Gemechu Dida (1:00:47) and Kenya&rsquo;s Boaz Kipkemei (1:00:54).
Aga, the 2019 Tokyo Marathon champion, maintained her win streak by clocking 1:08:04 ahead of China&rsquo;s Liang Tiantian (1:08:33) and He Wuxia (1:09:07).
This latest victory follows Aga&rsquo;s Xiamen Marathon win in January and her two marathon wins &ndash; in Xiamen and Hangzhou &ndash; in 2025. 
<h2>Obiri runs course record at NYC Half</h2>
Kenya's Hellen Obiri broke the course record to win the United Airlines NYC Half &ndash; a World Athletics Label road race &ndash; in New York on Sunday (15).
The multiple World Marathon Majors champion, who clinched New York City Marathon victories in 2023 and 2025, clocked 1:06:33 to win ahead of her compatriot Sharon Lokedi and improve on the course record of 1:07:04 set by&nbsp;Lokedi last year.
This time&nbsp;Lokedi ran&nbsp;1:07:10 for the runner-up spot. Great Britain's Megan Keith was third in 1:07:13.
South Africa's Adriaan Wildschutt won the men's race in 59:30.
He finished clear ahead of USA's Zouhair Talbi (59:41) and India's Gulveer Singh (59:42).

Ethiopia’s Fotyen Tesfay stormed to second on the world all-time list by running a 2:10:51 marathon debut, while Haftu Teklu and Haven Hailu Desse won the Seoul Marathon

Tesfay goes No.2 all time with 2:10:51 marathon debut in Barcelona

The world short track all-time lists had several new entries after the NCAA Indoor Championships, which concluded on Saturday (14) in Fayetteville. Garrett Kaalund&rsquo;s collegiate record of 19.95 was one of the standout performances, along with Ja&rsquo;Kobe Tharp&rsquo;s 7.32 60m hurdles victory and Samuel Ogazi&rsquo;s 44.57 African indoor record in the 400m.
Kaalund, representing the University of Southern California, dominated the men&rsquo;s 200m and came within 0.03 of a world short track record that has stood since 1996. He won in a collegiate record of 19.95 &ndash; the second-fastest indoor clocking in history behind Frank Fredericks&rsquo; world record &ndash; as Wanya McCoy placed second (20.17).
Ja&rsquo;Kobe Tharpe also jumped up the world all-time list into third place after winning the men&rsquo;s 60m hurdles in a collegiate record of 7.32, just 0.05 shy of the world record.
The 20-year-old, who won the NCAA and US outdoor titles last year, had smashed his PB in the heats with 7.36 and then went even quicker in the final, his 7.32 now placing him behind Grant Holloway and Colin Jackson on the world all-time list.
NCAA champion Ogazi was one of several Nigerian sprinters who excelled across the two days of action.
The Olympic finalist, representing the University of Alabama, led through the first lap of the 400m in 20.92 from Justin Braun. The gap between the pair closed slightly on the second lap, but Ogazi held on to win in 44.57 from Braun&rsquo;s 44.67.
Ogazi&rsquo;s time equals the ratified world short track record, though Khaleb McRae&rsquo;s &ndash; set on this same track last month &ndash; is pending ratification.
World finalist Kayinsola Ajayi of Nigeria equalled his own African record of 6.45 to win the men&rsquo;s 60m from Jelani Watkins (6.48). The duo had raced against each other in the heats 24 hours prior with Watkins clocking 6.46 to Ajayi&rsquo;s 6.51 on that occasion.
Dejanea Oakley won the women&rsquo;s 400m final in an indoor PB of 50.47. Ella Onojuvwevwo of Nigeria placed third in the final in 50.76, but one day prior she clocked a world-leading 50.28 in the heats, smashing the African indoor record that had stood for 28 years by almost half a second.
Teenager Adeajah Hodge maintained her 2026 winning streak in the women&rsquo;s 200m, taking the title in a world-leading 22.22, an outright national record for the British Virgin Islands. Earlier in the day she had finished second in the 60m (7.15) in a race won by Jamaica&rsquo;s Shenese Walker in 7.08.
Peyton Blair successfully defended his title in the heptathlon, smashing his PB with a world-leading 6503, elevating him to sixth on world all-time list. He led from the outset and had a series that included PBs in the long jump (7.70m), shot put (16.07m), pole vault (5.07m) and 1000m (2:39.54).
The Oregon all-rounder won by almost 400 points in a high-quality contest in which six men surpassed 6000 points. Kenneth Byrd was second (6132) and Jip Degreef third (6120).
Elsewhere, Lokesh Sathyanathan won a close long jump contest with an Indian indoor record of 8.21m. De&rsquo;Aundre Ward was second (8.20m).
